Legends in Indonesia

First meeting

Learning Goals (Tujuan Pembelajaran)

At the end of the lesson, students are able to:

1. identify the social function, generic structure, and language features of an Indonesian legend.
2. identify the characters, setting, conflict, resolution, and moral value of the legend.
3. use appropriate vocabulary and simple past tense expressions found in the narrative.
   

4. Examples of Simple Past Tense

   1. Malin Kundang left his hometown to seek a better life.
   2. His mother prayed for his safety every day.
   3. Malin became a wealthy merchant after many years.
   4. Roro Jonggrang did not marry Bandung Bondowoso.
   5. Jaka Tarub did not tell the truth.
   6. Timun Mas did not give up when the giant chased her.
   7. Did the farmer keep his promise?
   8. Did Sangkuriang finish the boat?
   9. Did Timun Mas defeat the giant?

Orientation

Long ago, in a peaceful village in Lampung, there was a beautiful river called Way Kencana. The villagers depended on the river for clean water, farming, and fishing. A kind girl named Kirana always reminded everyone to protect the river.

Complication

A wealthy merchant named Rangga persuaded the villagers to dig for valuable stones beneath the river. Although Kirana warned them not to damage nature, many villagers ignored her advice. Soon, the river became polluted, the fish disappeared, and the rice fields dried up.

Resolution

The villagers realized their mistake and asked for forgiveness. After a night of heavy rain, the river became clear again, but the valuable stones had disappeared forever. The villagers understood that nature had protected itself from human greed.

Reorientation

Since then, the villagers have worked together to protect the river. They planted trees, kept the river clean, and taught future generations to respect nature. The story reminds us that caring for the environment brings prosperity, while greed leads to destruction.
